“Town of Medicine” Doshomachi [Doshōmachi]

The Doshomachi district in Osaka City flourished as the “Town of Medicine” during the Edo period, as it was responsible for pricing and exclusively distributing medicinal ingredients.
Even after 350 years, it remains a major pharmaceutical hub, home to over 300 pharmaceutical companies, including the headquarters of leading Japanese pharmaceutical firms such as Shionogi & Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Tanabe Pharma Corporation, Sumitomo Pharma Co., Ltd., Takeda Pharmaceutical Company Limited, and Ono Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

Doshomachi Museum Street
Along approximately 300 meters of Doshomachi Street, there are exhibition facilities related to pharmaceuticals, earning it the name “Doshomachi Museum Street.”
